When we were living in Ubud, Bali, we walked by Ibu Jero's tiny sewing shop every day. She would always smile, wave and bring her toddler out to greet us. She doesn't speak English, but she always had a special way of making us feel special.
Ibu Jero sews traditional ceremony clothes for the locals. She doesn't normally get travelers coming into her shop, but we knew that we wanted to wanted to present her with a project and help support her business. Because of our limited ability to communicate, we would need to provide Ibu Jero with all the supplies and drawings of our idea so she could just focus on doing what she does best - sewing works of art.
We drove by Scooter to the fabric markets in Densapar, Bali and shopped for handwoven traditional fabrics. After selecting our fabrics, we brought them to Ibu Jero and asked her to create drawstring bags. She was delighted. She had never made anything for a foreigner and she was tickled that we wanted to represent her in our shop.
