Tyler's Take: Opportunity

Bust A Move are posts focused on what Tyler and Megan are thinking and learning before, during and after their move to another country.

Tyler's Take: I Like the idea of Starting From Scratch in Bali

Yes, I get the irony that I'm saying I'll have more opportunity leaving America—"the land of opportunity" (my source for this quote are the films An American Tail and Fievel Goes West.) But this is much less about opportunity in the "there are no cats in America" sense and more of a "what do I want to do when I grow up" dilemma.

My current job is as a creative copywriter for a giant company, and it's a rad job. I work with amazing people, plus I get to curse at work. But no matter how happy you are doing something, do you ever get the feeling you want to try something else?

I tried to become a copywriter the moment I discovered it was actually "a thing you could be", plus I really didn't want to use my accounting degree because numbers are LAME. I wrote for magazines, created a blog, tried stand up and I finally got a shot to be a copywriter at THE ad agency in Portland. That was almost 10 years ago, and now I kinda want to see what something else feels like…I don't actually know what that something is, though.

Advertising is the only thing I've really done as a grown up. All the odd jobs I'd worked don't seem to matter much now. I guess as a Macaroni Grill server, I learned what Italian food shouldn't taste like? As a hotel front-desk clerk, I learned I could browse the internet for hours at a time? As a costumed character for kids birthday parties, I learned I could talk like Elmo? At friends' weddings, I'm typically considered a dance machine? Like I said, not much to work with...

I know I like having control of things in my life, my career being #1, and I guess Bali is a jumping off point for this. Losing a lot of the things I can control to hopefully build myself back up from scratch and figure things out anew. Fingers and mouse-tails crossed.
