Nasi Campur at Mama's Warung

All We Can Eat are posts focused on all the cheap and/or street food that Megan and Tyler devour.

Mama's Nasi Campur is the best dish in Bali

Nasi campur is like a Balinese box of chocolates…except with satay and local spices and some salad stuff that's probably beans but it doesn't matter because it tastes so good. Our rule of thumb is that when you’re wanting to eat the best food from a region, 80% of the time you should have no clue what you’re eating—and nasi campur fits this bill perfectly for us.

We've had this dish over a dozen times at a dozen other places, but finding it at this unassuming little restaurant about 2km away from Ubud's tourist area (and a 1/2km away from our homestay) made it even more amazing.

There’s sweet and spicy allover the plate. There’s some tempeh that’s crispy and sweet while a green bean salad concoction on the other side is adding just the right amount of high-def flavor. The satay is cooked to perfection while everything else on the plate tastes like heaven when you mix it in with rice.

The beautiful thing about Mamas is that everything on the menu is made to order—and we mean everything. One night, our tummies weren't feeling well so we ordered soup (weird in 85° weather, we know) to which Mama just started making us soup from scratch. And not even a pot's worth—she made us each a single serving of soup right there in front of us. And it was AMAZING! Everything is fresh from that day, and prepared in what I’d equate to a kitchen you’d find at a dorm room.

Overall, Mama’s is leading the nasi campur battle for me. A full plate of food will run you about $2.50, and don’t even get me started on those mango shakes!

If you ever were in the Ubud area and wanted to give Mama's a try, they also offer cooking classes—and if you end up cooking anywhere near as good as Mama, you're set for life. The TripAdvisor ratings are high already, but I give Mama’s Warung 5 "delicious sways" out of 5.
